Grimm Diaries series by Cameron Jace

Lately I’ve been reading the Grimm Diaries series by Cameron Jace. After reading I searched for more books like it, which is how I came across Jace’s books.

Once again I’ve fallen completely in love with a young adult series. And this indie fiction collection is right up my alley.

So, we’re all aware of the classic fairy tales. Most of the popular ones come from The Brothers Grimm.(you’ll see a few other famous characters in the books that come from other famous classic authors) Are you more accustomed to the fairy tales that have been given a ribbons and bows makeover by Disney and puked out into a pretty tale of ‘happily ever after’? Well, in case you weren’t aware, Disney didn’t come up with the tales on their own. They’re pretty much just as devious in their story telling as the Grimm’s were, with one thing in common. They stole the stories. That’s right. Stolen. I mean, stop and think about the possibility for a second. What if what the Grimm’s wrote wasn’t what really happened? And, what if the stories weren’t actually fairy tales, but truth that’s been twisted and flip-flopped into bedtime stories and fables. Why? Who knows. Maybe so, like Disney did in turn, the Grimm’s could become incredibly wealthy in fame and popularity. Maybe because they were genuinely inspired to give the world magical tales for children and adults to read, fall in love with, and pass on through the generations. Or… maybe because what’s written as fable is actually truth, and much, much darker a reality than the world is prepared to deal with. Ignorance is bliss, right?

In Cameron Jace’s books, he takes everything you think you know about fairy tales and completely turns your knowledge upside down, and inside out. You pretty much need to erase all the fluff and glitter from your mind, and start fresh. A clean slate. You will meet many of your favorite fairy tale characters, and get to know them all in a whole new light. Ever wonder why Snow White’s ‘wicked stepmother’ (another LIE as she wasn’t actually Snow’s stepmother) was so evil? And is Snow White really the image of purity we all have her portrayed as? Why is Little Red Riding Hood really going to Grandma’s house?? (I KNEW there was more to the story about the wolf, too!)

But here’s the thing. Jace’s books come in a bit of an odd order, or set. The series is different from any I’ve read, in the sense of format. First, you have book 1 in the series, . (soon to be released – THIS MONTH – is book 2, Cinderella Dressed in Ashes) In the actual Grimm Diaries series, you have the story as it’s actually happening. In ‘real time’. So, if you like you are more than welcome to start here in the books. Or, you can . The prequels really help to paint the scene. But not in the ‘real time’ scene. The paint the scene of the world of the characters, their lives, backgrounds, and where they come from. You really get a much better understanding of the characters through the prequels. However!! Word of caution. The prequels are written/narrated by the characters. It’s the publishing of their diaries. So it’s their stories, in their words. Which means, some of the information you may be getting could be skewed so the story leans more in the characters favor. When it comes to those who truly have an evil heart, which I hope you quickly recognize who they are and don’t fall for their tricks, this can be especially dangerous. At any rate, I personally recommend you read the prequels first. There are currently 14 (prequels 15 – 18 also to be released this month!!!), and are all short reads. You can easily get through a set of them in a day or two. What I love about them the prequels is that you really do get a ‘behind the scenes’ look into the characters and their world. I love that there’s no true order, so you’re left with a lot of puzzle pieces that you’ll have to wait to fit together along the way. Oh, and they may not all fit the way you think they should.

Lastly, I have to add that what I find unique about Jace, himself, is that he very much takes to heart what the readers have to say about his books, and works hard to address all of their questions. In doing so, this is where some of the prequels are continuing to be developed and written. The stories are not altered in anyway due to reader criticisms, Jace is just broadening the width and depth of the stories. I love this about Cameron Jace. And, I truly love these books. They are a fun and inviting read for anyone who loves a twisted indie fiction. If you have a young adult reader who favors this genre of books, I would say these books are good for readers 13 years old and up.

Cameron is a writing genius! I’ve loved all the prequels so far and SWS. Haven’t had a chance to read Cinderella Dressed in Ashes yet, but hoping to start it in the next week. I’m sure it will be amazing just like the others.

I am currently reading the first book of Game of Thrones series. I love the show so, I have to find out what’s really going on. (LOL). Anyway, I have read all of Cameron’s Grimm Diaries Prequels and Snow White Sorrow and I loved them all. I would love to win a copy of Cinderella Dressed in Ashes and I am still waiting for him to release the next set of prequels. Otherwise, my next read probably be Gerald’s Game by Stephen King.

Gerald’s Game was the first Stephen King novel I ever read. HOLY YIKES was that probably not the best King book to start with as a 16 year old.
And I’m SO EXCITED for the next set of prequels to come out as well. I’m really looking forward to them.
I haven’t seen Game of Thrones, but have heard the books are great. I should probably add them too my list.

I have a hard time reading other books when I’m currently wrapped up in a series. Even if the next book in the series isn’t out yet… I feel like I’m committing book adultery on the characters LOL

I am reading Run, Brother, Run A Memoir Of A Murder In My Family by David Berg. It’s a good book. I like true stories, history and biographies. As well as novels. I have read the prequels, a family member loaned the to me. I enjoyed them. The best book I have read this year is 11/22/63 by Stephen King.

YAY! A book review and giveaway! I LOVE fractured fairy tales and these sound absolutely crazy good! I am definitely going to add them to my “Must Read” list!! Right now I am finishing up the A Song of Ice and Fire series (better known as Game of Thrones because of the tv series); it’s been a great read, but with 5 books averaging about 1000 pages total, I am going to be glad when I’m finished! haha! ;)
